First condom theme bar opens in Chandigarh

After the advent of theme restaurants, theme bars are next in line with a unique 'Condom Bar' opening its door for curious visitors in Chandigarh.

An initiative of Chandigarh Industrial Tourism Corporation (CITCO) and AIDSontrol Society of Chandigarh, the bar is aimed at propagating the message ofSafe Sex' while creating awareness about HIV/AIDS.

"Actually there is a taboo as regards AIDS and HIV are concerned. So we have joined hands with the AIDS Control Society of Chandigarh and we thought through this medium we will try to promote and prevent this dreaded disease," said V.K. Malhotra, General Manager, CITCO.
'Condom bar' is just like any other normal bar but with a difference, that it provides free condom samples to its customers.

In such a milieu where sex is a taboo, 'Condom Bar' would prove to be a hit as the visitors can get free samples here without facing any embarrassment.

With Western culture influencing the young generation and indulgence in pre-marital sex ruling the order of the day, condoms and information on safe sex is must for the people especially the youngsters.

Visitors said initiatives like these would spread awareness and help check spread of AIDS.

"Basically it is a big step forward. The young generation needs this kind of thing. Instead of always hiding it in the closet and keeping away from these things, it should be brought out in the open now, out in the front instead of always being hidden away. It should prove to be a good thing in future," said Vishal Parashar, a 23-year-old.

"Condoms are available in medical stores as well but people are hesitant to ask for them. This bar would solve their predicament as it would distribute free condom samples and this would also help in creating awareness in regards to HIV/AIDS," said Pooja Thakur, President, Chandigarh Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS.

Located at a sprawling complex, the bar has condoms adorning its walls and the staff with AIDS logo on their clothes serving the customers.

According to the United Nations, 5.7 million Indians are living with HIV/AIDS - the world's largest caseload.
